Art-202 | Materials List

Posted by: Ping

Instructor Note:
Below is a listing of materials you will need for our class. You will need other materials as the class progresses. Each of you will also use materials at a rate personal to you, so some of you will need to replenish supplies during the semester. We will talk about the additional materials during the semester and I will make every effort to allow you to combine materials orders/purchases with your classmates in order to minimize costs.

There are lockers available for you to store your art supplies. I recommend that you consider purchasing some kind of container for your supplies so that they are kept together in an organized fashion and so that you can transport them easily.

Materials are available in the University Bookstore and at other locations in Kirksville (Wal-Mart, Westlakes Hardware, etc.) … However, I strongly recommend that you order from an online source such as Dick Blick, Jerry’s Artarama, Daniel Smith, etc. If you live in or near St. Louis or Kansas City, I can recommend the Art Mart in St. Louis and Creative Coldsnow in Kansas City. You can find Hobby Lobby in Quincy, Columbia, St. Louis, and Kansas City as well.

Drawing Media-Dry (you will use many of the same materials used in ASF I)

  • Vine Charcoal: For example: Bob’s Fine Vine Charcoal
  • Graphite: Pencils: Ebony, B, 2B, 4B and 6B (10 or more for each) / Sticks – a variety, 2B and softer
  • Conte (optional) Sticks – black, white and some warm, earth tones such as sanguine and umber
  • Erasers – you’ll probably go through several kneaded erasers. Also buy a variety that includes gum, plastic and rubber. They will be useful to you beyond this class.
  • Sandpaper – you can buy this in a form that includes small sheets on a wooden paddle. You’ll be using this to sharpen charcoal sticks, graphite sticks, etc.)
  • Utility knife / Box cutter (as a pencil sharpener)something that will make good points on your various pencils.
  • Blending Stumbs
  • Chamois Cloth – for use with charcoal
  • Draft Brush
  • SpectraFix Spray Fixative for fixing charcoal and pastel drawings. This is non-toxic, workable, and fully archival. Because it is all-natural and odor-free, you can spray your project indoors while you work. NO OTHER SPRAY FIXATIVE IS ALLOWED
  • Tape – masking (like the blue painter’s tape)
  • Portfolio – Purchase a good one that will hold the largest paper size you have plus 4 inches.
  • Newsprint – at least one pad of 18” X 24” paper. You may find you need more.
  • Drawing Pad– a pad of good, student grade drawing paper (18” X 24”) suitable for the dry media you will be using in the course. Again, you may find you need more than a pad of this paper.
  • Drawing Board: 18″X24″ plywood or portable sketch board
  • Mat Board — you will need to mat some of you work from the course. You will need mat board (white or off-white), foamcore backing, and a means to cut your mats (blades for the mat cutters we have are available at the book store). You will also need Linen Tape for mounting your work in the mat. You may want to share this expense with other members of the class since a roll of Linen Tape can cost almost $30.
  • Rags! For clean-up (DO NOT USE PAPER TOWELS FOR CLEAN-UP!!)
  • Lock – for your locker
  • Rubber band / clip

***It is recommended that when you purchase art materials, particularly for classroom and institutional use, you should consider products bearing the AP seal of the Art & Creative Materials Institute, Inc. (ACMI) that are certified non-toxic
