Liberal Arts Portfolio Guideline
Senior Seminar/Graduation Requirement

Posted by: Ping

What is it? The University has a graduation requirement for all students the successful completion and submission of a portfolio of work that responds to prompts presented to students during the year of their graduation. These prompts are created by Truman Faculty to allow them to assess the liberal arts curriculum and Truman experience and to give students the chance to build and reflect on a portfolio sampling of important work that demonstrates their knowledge and skills in important liberal learning areas.

Where do I get more information and how do I submit? You can find complete information regarding the portfolio, including directions for how to submit yours on line at: http://portfolio.truman.edu/

When do I need to complete this Portfolio? Since the Portfolio is both a requirement for graduation and for completion of Senior Seminar, you will need to complete your Portfolio this semester, even though the University deadline for Spring graduates is not until next semester*. You do not have to submit all of the Portfolio materials to your Senior Seminar instructor, but you must verify that you have submitted your Portfolio by the Senior Seminar due dates noted below.  In order to get credit for completing your Portfolio for Senior Seminar you must:

  • Submit your Portfolio in accordance with the deadlines below, and
  • Submit an electronic copy of your cover letter with your name in the file name of the letter (example:  SeniorCoverLetter – John Smith.docx)

Deadlines for Senior Seminar Portfolio/Portfolio Cover Letter:

  • December 2013 graduates         Friday, November 1, 2013 – Earlier Deadline
  • May 2014 graduates                   Friday, March 28, 2014 – Earlier Deadline
  • To ensure smooth graduation, you want to have your portfolio completed on time:
Spring Graduation – First Friday in April: April 4, 2014
Summer Graduation – Friday after the July 4th holiday: July 11, 2014
Fall Graduation – Second Friday in November: November 8, 2013

(*You can always add and replace work in your portfolio at a later date as long as your final submission is by the University-established submission deadlines.)

REMEMBER – The university portfolio requirement is both a requirement for graduation and for completion of Senior Seminar. We have set an earlier deadline in our class, so we can ensure smooth clearances, especially for those graduating this semester. Students who do not submit their portfolio will not receive their diploma nor can they receive transcripts or other verification of graduation. All students will be getting an e-mail from Dr. Anne Moody soon, and the Portfolio Office will be sending you reminders throughout the semester; You will also get pestered by the registrar, so sooner really is better.
