Mentoring

The AIGA/NY Mentoring Program has been providing creative professionals with the opportunity to make a difference in the life of an ambitious, aspiring young artist for 20 years.

 

The AIGA/NY Mentor program kicks off in the fall and gives professionals the chance to work with talented, ambitious students from the New York City High School of Art and Design. If you are interested and an AIGA/NY member, please EMAIL ANJALI.

 

THE SPECIFICS

Mentors and students are asked to make a 3-year commitment – with pairs meeting in the student’s sophomore year and continuing through graduation.

Mentor student pairs meet one-on-one with a goal of spending four hours together every month. Pairs are invited to participate in planned programming but are also encouraged to meet independently.

 

 

The High School of Art and Design is a specialty high school where students are accepted after submitting a portfolio prior to their freshman year. Teachers and guidance counselors encourage students that are especially driven and talented to participate.Students often ask their mentors for guidance on portfolios, class projects and college applications. Programing caters to an interest in the arts by planning events such as portfolio reviews, project based workshops and an intensive end of the year project lead by a designer or design organization.

 

End of the year projects have partnered with designers and organizations such as Debbie Millman, Triboro Design, Michael Bierut, James Victore, The Green Patriot Poster project and World Studio.

The programming for the 2013-14 school year included a portfolio night with SVA, a hackable animation workshop with Eyebeam, a tour of the New Museum, 3 hands-on workshops with Debbie Millman to develop visual narratives and an end of the year party at Makerbot.
