You will need the following materials very early in the semester. As you are most likely already aware, the mat board can be purchased in Kirksville. However, as a cost savings, some of you as a group or individually, may want to order your mat board and Foam Core online. If so, make certain that you place your order in a timely fashion so as to have the materials on time for the class.
White Mat Board – If you will be submitting pieces of Artwork for your Portfolio Proficiency that have not been matted, then you will need to have an appropriate number of sheets of White mat board for matting those pieces. Remember, all mats are to be cut 3” wider than the artwork being matted (on all four sides) (i.e., if the drawing image measures 18” x 24”, then the mat board needs to measure 24” x 30” on the outside dimensions).
Foam Core – Again, for any artwork that needs matting for this course, you will need an appropriate number of sheets of ¼” thick white Foam Core to be used as backing for the matted pieces. Remember, the outside dimensions of the mat board are the same as the outside dimensions of the mats.
Linen Tape – Linen tape will be used to construct your hinged mats and to mount your artwork in the mats. Linen tape is basically acid free and will not cause discoloration on your artwork. The “Self-Adhesive” type is easiest to use and less “messy”.
Mat Cutter Blades – Most of you will already have these blades. If not, then you can purchase packs of them at the University Bookstore. You will be required to furnish your own blades for use in the University provided Logan mat cutters.
Ruler – A cork-backed metal ruler at least 18” in length or longer.
Pencil – Used in measuring and laying out mats.
Double-sided Scotch Tape – This tape is used to hold the mat flat against the Foam Core backing. Note: Backward rolled tape cannot be used for this purpose.
