Cannabis 101: The Facts

Understanding THC vs CBD

THC
An abbreviation for tetrahydrocannabinol, THC is the part of cannabis responsible for the psychoactive effects of the plant.

CBD
An abbreviation for cannabidiol, CBD is found second in average volume to THC in cannabis plants. New research shows it can treat pain and anxiety without the psychoactive effects THC is associated with.

Understanding the Forms of Cannabis

Bud

Also known as:
ganja, weed, pot, etc, bud is the most “traditional” form of cannabis.

What to look for:
Bud should have a strong smell, lots of crystals and hairs, and few sticks and seeds. It should also be sticky (not dry), green (not brown), and not leafy or wet. It’s important that the bud you purchase has also been tested and examined to be sure that there were no dangerous chemicals used to grow the plant and that it was not exposed to mites.

How it works:
The flower of a cannabis plant is called bud. Bud is usually broken apart or grinded before being smoked. After grinding, there are endless tools to smoke bud, such as through the use of a one-hitter, chillum, pipe, vaporizer, bubbler, bong, or in the form of a joint or blunt.

Concentrates

Also known as:
hash, dabs, extracts, shatter, oil, wax, etc, concentrates are quickly growing in popularity.

What to look for:
It’s important to buy concentrates that have gone through purity testing. Concentrates have the potential to be dangerous if they have been contaminated with harmful chemicals that were introduced during poor extraction methods.

How it works:
Through extraction or using a sieve, trichomes are separated from the plant to condense its cannabinoids. Vapor from concentrates can be inhaled through use of a rig or vaporizer.

Edibles

Also known as:
medibles, cannabis-infused food is an alternative to inhalation of cannabis.

What to look for:
It’s important to purchase edibles that have been tested so that you can be sure of the amount of THC or CBD in the product.

How it works:
Ingestion of cannabis is different from inhaled cannabis because it is absorbed by the liver. Due to this, edibles produce a stronger body than head high, can take as long two hours to take effect, and can last longer than smoked cannabis.
