The International Design Awards (IDA) was founded in 2007 by a group of visionary designers, thinkers, and entrepreneurs. It was established as a response to the lack of recognition for exceptional multidisciplinary designs and to celebrate smart and sustainable design practices. The IDA aims to acknowledge, celebrate, and promote outstanding design visionaries while also discovering emerging talent in the fields of Architecture, Interior Design, Product Design, Graphic Design, and Fashion Design on a global scale.

In its 16th edition, the International Design Awards (IDA) received an overwhelming response from designers worldwide. Thousands of exceptional submissions competed for the coveted top prizes, and the winners of the 2022 International Design Awards were announced in Spring 2022 in Los Angeles.

Participants from over 80 countries contributed to the competition, presenting the IDA jury with the challenging task of evaluating the submissions. The jury members were astounded by the remarkably high standard of design entries across all five award disciplines: Architecture, Interior Design, Product Design, Graphic Design, and Fashion Design.

Notably, among the 72 esteemed award-winning companies were industry giants such as Google, Facebook, IBM, NBC, Autodesk, BP, Adidas, Mercedes Benz, Paypal, and Nestle. Additionally, the awards recognized the achievements of many renowned universities from around the globe. Some of these notable institutions include the ArtCenter College of Design, Academy of Art University, School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design, School of The Art Institute of Chicago, Rhode Island School of Design, California College of the Arts, The Cooper Union, Savannah College of Art and Design, Maryland Institute of Art, MIT, NIT, VT, FIT, Harvard University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Purdue University, UIUC, UCLA, NYU, UC Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, University of Washington, Syracuse University, University of Arts London, Sydney Design School, Osaka University of Arts, University of Monterrey, China Academy of Art, Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Sun Yat-Sen University, The University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore, National Taiwan University, Royal College of Art, The Glasgow School of Art, Istituto Marangoni Milan, Kingston University, and York University.

I had the privilege of participating in the 16th International Design Awards held in Los Angeles. I submitted three entries showcasing my design work, which included one logo and two posters. I am thrilled to share that my submissions garnered recognition and received multiple prizes. Among the accolades, I was honored with three honorable mentions and one recognition of official selection.

Being acknowledged in this prestigious competition is truly gratifying and serves as a testament to the dedication and effort I put into my designs. I am grateful for the opportunity to showcase my creativity and talent alongside other outstanding designers from around the world. Work Title: DCNE 2023- Event Logo
Designer: Ping Xu
Prize: IDA 2022 Honorable Mention in Logos (International Design Awards)

The logo was meticulously crafted to promote the DCNE program, which is one of the Study Abroad programs offered by UTRGV’s esteemed School of Art & Design. Its purpose is to inspire students to participate in this captivating program at UTRGV. DCNE stands for “Digital Cultural Narratives in Europe,” encapsulating the essence of the program.

The logo design ingeniously combines the European symbol with the iconic lone star symbol, representing the program’s profound connection between Texas and Europe. This fusion symbolizes the unique cultural exchange fostered by the DCNE program.

The word mark is skillfully rendered in a legible typeface and capitalized appropriately. This choice ensures clear and concise communication of the program’s name, “Digital Cultural Narratives in Europe.” It serves as a visual anchor, reinforcing the program’s focus and purpose.

Moreover, by utilizing the UTRGV color palette, the logo exudes a sense of cohesion and alignment with the university’s branding. This deliberate choice ensures consistency and reinforces the connection between the DCNE program and UTRGV’s esteemed reputation.

Work Title: DCNE 2023 – Recruitment Poster
Designer: Ping Xu
Prize: IDA 2022 Honorable Mention in Posters (International Design Awards)

The DCNE-2023 poster was expertly crafted with the aim of recruiting UTRGV students for participation in the captivating study abroad program. DCNE, an acronym for DIGITAL CULTURAL NARRATIVES IN EUROPE, represents the essence of this transformative experience. As an integral part of the UTRGV School of Art & Design study abroad program, DCNE offers an enticing opportunity among the various study abroad options available at UTRGV.

To develop a comprehensive collateral campaign, I meticulously designed the DCNE program logo, an eye-catching program T-shirt, an enticing DCNE-2023 recruitment poster, engaging flyers, captivating social media banners, and captivating digital illustrations. Each element was carefully curated to capture the essence of the program and entice students to embark on this enriching journey.

By creating the DCNE-2023 poster and other visual assets, the goal is to generate excitement and encourage UTRGV students to seize this incredible opportunity for personal and academic growth through the study abroad program.

Work Title: Year of the Tiger – Event Poster
Designer: Ping Xu
Prize: IDA 2022 Honorable Mention in Posters (International Design Awards)
https://www.idesignawards.com/winners/zoom.php?eid=9-41644-22
The collateral campaign for the “Year of The Tiger 2022” was crafted for the Office of International Admissions & Student Services (IASS) at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, specifically for their Lunar New Year 2022 event. The campaign encompasses a range of elements, including an event logo/mascot design, a gift bag design, a T-shirt design, a poster design, an Instagram post design, as well as web banner designs for IASS’s official website and Facebook page.

In Chinese culture, the Tiger holds a position of great significance, being revered as the king of all beasts. It is a symbol of power, courage, and good fortune, believed to embody positive energy. Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of Chinese traditional folk art, particularly the Cloth Tiger, I conceived a captivating logo and tiger mascot for the event. To bring the mascot to life, I utilized Adobe Illustrator’s remarkable 3D features, resulting in two stunning three-dimensional tiger illustrations. The underlying concept of the design is to express a collective desire for a peaceful and auspicious new year for all.
