A-341_Project-2: Type In Motion

Posted by: Ping

Project Description: Creating a 30 seconds kinetic typography with Flash CS6
Project Requirement
: Enabling Words to Mimic Verbal Meaning, Visually and Kinetically
Project Example: Kinetic Typography

Objective

The project is aimed at expanding students’ typographic vocabulary through the use of time-based composition, soundtrack, and animation. The application of Flash features will enable the designers to incorporate motion, scale change, sequence, and mood to typographic communication.

Students develop the movement-related project by using semantic typography with the objective of enhancing visual form, meaning, and communication. By experiencing the rhythmic and expressive use of type in motion, students will investigate varying type size, weight, spatial relations, form, and movement within a word(s), while preserving sound typographic principles.

This junior-level requirement is intended to expose students to a more interpretive use of typography, which can be applied in a variety of applications, for example, film and television titles, commercials, information kiosks, and web banners.

Strategy

It is the responsibility of the student to determine his/her communication strategies and continue a degree of self-directed learning.

  1. Brainstorming ideas and drawing storyboard accordingly
  2. Shifting paradigms and distinction between”Flying Type”(type that indiscriminately moves) and “Type in Motion” (motion used to enhance meaning)
  3. Exploring different type of motion
  4. Integrating kinetic principle with motion aesthetics

Outcome

Students discover that “Type in Motion” can enhance visual form, meaning, and communication beyond static, anchored messages. Their project research reveals that this meaning is greatly influenced by their culture, spoken language, and semiotic reference.

Additionally, it is discovered by many that kinetic typography specifically designed with the intent of enhancing meaning can evoke emotional responses. These reactions, whether they are excitement, delight, humor, agitation, or tension, make typographic communication a richer, more memorable experience, even if these reactions are momentary.

Utilize some of the following Flash features to animate your kinetic typography
• Frame-by-frame
• Motion Tween (Straight Tween/Oriented Objects to Path)
• Shape Tween
• Registration Points
• Mask
• 3D Motion
• Motion Blur
• Explode
• Twist
• Echo
• Bone Animation
• Nested Animation
