With the COVID-19 situation worsening in the past few weeks and with the vaccination rates stagnating, the Swiss authorities have decided to tighten the travel restrictions. Switzerland was open for the majority of travelers during the summer as every country was having successful vaccination campaigns and wasn’t registering increased infection rates. However, as soon as the Omicron COVID-19 variant was identified and started to circulate in the EU and Schengen Area countries, most EU/Schengen Area countries, including Switzerland, decided to tighten their entry rules in order to prevent any further spread of the new variant. Despite the fact that a new COVID-19 variant has been detected, Switzerland still continues to permit entry for travelers from specific countries, while others are subject to stringent entry requirements.
