Course Description

Art-340 – Digital Graphics is an introductory to intermediate-level Visual Communication course in the technical development and use of digital graphics in design. Raster and vector image development photographic enhancement retouching and modification techniques are explored along with exposure to conceptual and content communication
problem-solving.

This course will undertake the personal development of your ability as a graphic designer, an image designer, a digital illustrator, and a digital photographer to visually communicate your ideas in a creative manner. The effective integration of digital photographic elements is the particular emphasis in this course.

The structure of the class includes lectures, demonstrations, in-class studio activities, and project developments. Projects will be assigned and due on the scheduled dates. At the completion of each assigned project, a critique and a class review/presentation will be taken place.

Goal

The goal of this course is to examine the wide range of new techniques being implemented by digital photographers, as well as examine the specifics of how the new tools might change photographs by the world at large.

On the top of investigating the mechanics of the amazing spectrum of new digital cameras, students will be encouraged to continue the following explorations:

A. Develop advanced understanding of digital graphic software
B. Integrate ideas and graphic creation in the process of conceptual thinking
C. Refine photographic aesthetic as it relates to solving visual communication problems
D. Refine skills in evaluation of visual problems to develop visual/graphic solutions
E. Develop professional attitudes towards idea development

Objective

The A-340 Digital Graphics deals with advanced image retouching skills, digital photographic techniques, and practices of various types of digital imaging including
digital alphabet, book covers, trick landscape, and surreal images. After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Become familiar with the process of digital imaging and give critical thinking for  problem solving
  • Become familiar with DSLR cameras and basic lighting/shooting
  • Create a complete digital photo system that integrates color, tone, and merges, retouches, and creates imagery in a dynamic view
  • Explore advanced and creative Photoshop skills, and create computer generated photographic portfolio with quality thematic documents utilizing RAW format images for specific projects
  • Develop more self-directed and inspired digital images through a concentration of process, communication, technical skills, and professionalism
  • Create print-ready and web-ready spot images and large scale surreal photography for creative solutions
