DUE: Friday, March 7
, 2014

For this assignment you need to visit the recent show at the University Art Gallery (first floor of OP, northwest corner of the building). Please check the Gallery Schedule of 2013/14 academic year. You should choose two works of art in the show to write on, and will produce an essay of 2 pages.

Your assignment is as follows:

ESSAY
Answer the questions below and put your answers into paragraph form (do not just answer yes or no). When discussing the work in your essay, try to use the vocabulary terms covered in class. Please feel free to provide additional information about the work in your essay.

  1. Identify the work (artist, title, year)
  2. What is the form of the work? (i.e. painting, drawing, etc.)
  3. What is the medium? (watercolor, gouache, charcoal on paper, etc.)
  4. What is the subject of the work (portrait, illustration, non-objective, etc.)
  5. What is the content of the work? (what is it about?)
  6. Describe the work.
  7. What is the compositional balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical, approximate symmetry, etc.)?
  8. What is the dominant area?
  9. How has the artist used the art elements? (line, value, shape, texture, color)
  10. What is the psychological or emotive impact of the work? How does the work make you feel?
  11. Has the artist used the elements and materials effectively to convey his or her ideas?

You should turn in:

  • a computer-processed write-up of 2 pages
  • on the top of the first page should appear:
    • your name
    • the name of the artist, title, materials, and dimensions (if available) for your chosen work
    • although no research is required for the assignment, should you do any, please include a bibliography. If you interview the artist, that should be included in the bibliography (all style manuals should show how to cite an interview correctly).

About University Art Gallery Visit and Assignments:

The University Art Gallery provides excellent art educational and cultural event opportunities. Students should be encouraged to visit the gallery often. In order to complete the above assignment, you will be required to spend your time next week (Jan 29 & 31th) in the University Gallery writing (and drawing).

There are certain accepted protocols one must observe when visiting the University Gallery. One is that you are not to touch the art work. A second is that when you draw in the gallery, you are not to make a mess. Also, as you write or draw, be aware of other visitors to the Gallery and do not block their view of the works on display.
