Ping Xu was born and raised in Shanghai. He began his professional career and served as an Art Director, a Creative Director, and a Production Director in Shanghai advertising industry since 1988. He began teaching at Kansas State University in 2003, continued his teaching career through the University of Southern Mississippi from the Fall semester of 2005, then through Truman State University in January 2010. Ping joined The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Fall 2015.
Ping’s expertise includes logo design, poster design, advertising design, interactive design, digital photography, and typography. Ping has been teaching visual communication courses at all levels in the U.S. academic domain since 2005. His research interest is to create visual concepts through practical experiment and contemporary media and deliver ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate consumers and target audiences.
Ping has received ten American Advertising Awards from 2007 to 2017, and has published ten works of graphic design and illustration in Volume-IX, Volume-VII, and Volume-XI of the International Contemporary Artists book in 2013, 2014, and 2016.
Ping Xu is a member of Art Directors Club, New York, a member of AIGA San Antonio, and a member of American Advertising Federation. In recent years, he joined the 6th United Designs International Design Exhibition in St. Louis, MO and Korea in 2013, since then he joined 7th United Design International Biennial Design Exhibition in Shanghai Normal University in 2014. Ping works as a freelancer to help design many pro bono works for local communities, non-profit organizations, and international clients.
Ping Xu initiated and joined Cross Connections International Design Exhibition and curated it in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012 respectively. As an international exchange program, the visual communication juried exhibition represents a significant overview of international graphic design trends, featuring work by faculty and students, from eight institutions that are making their mark in the Visual Communication field within their respective countries. The eight institutions in past years were selected from the United State, Germany, Belgian, South Africa, Mexico, and China.
In order for students to explore phenomenal Chinese culture and get a well-rounded undergraduate learning experience in the United States of America, Ping Xu has been leading Study Abroad China trips in Truman State University since 2011. During the Study Abroad trips, he also arranged graphic design students to take internships in two global leading advertising agencies TBWA Worldwide and McCann Worldgroup China branches in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Internship opportunities enable students an edge in the competitive job market. After he joined UTRGV, he is also the first faculty member who led UTRGV students to take part in the UTRGV's Study Abroad China program. The 2016 Study Abroad China program included cities' exploration in Beijing, Hengyang, and Guilin, Chinese National Parks excursions, and Digital Photography minimester class in UTRGV's sister school in China.
